Mr.Tristan: Man of words and goal.

I feel very happy to meet a friend online who is studying at queens college. He loves to read books of different thoughts and institutions. As in future he want to major in sociology or english so he reads a lot. He is very exited to talk to me as he want to inquire a lot about me and want to get every trifle thing about me. Like my home town, languages I know, what are my hobbies and how I like New York.
He is a very religious person and has true faith in Cristianity and Jesus Christ(A.S) and he very fasinated about the languages as he knows latin english also. And also he is very sympathaic person as he fells how I will be missing my family, friends and country.Overall I find Mr.Tristan to be very enthusiastic, straight focused and religious man of words.

Shift Happens

This video is courtesy of Diego, and nicely illustrates the kinds of rapid changes our world is undergoing due to accelerated advances in technology and rapid information distribution. I encourage all of you to post videos, pictures, cartoons, articles, etc. that are relevant to the course!

Some perspective about...Liz

Elizabeth has lots to offer. She may seem a little quiet but it all changes according to the circumstances. Parties and friends are very important for her, so important that she might rethink about her homework, although it always ends up being homework first or after all the partying has ended. Work is an important part of her life, especially when its pay day, how else could she afford her cell phone and internet at home?

The other side that it is hard to believe it exists in her is the one that cares about others. She is a good listener and opens up to give the most sincere advices of all. When you have trouble or need something you don’t know, Liz is there to help, weather it means teasing you or really helping, there is always something she could do for you. And least but not last, family is something as important as breathing. Her heritage will always be there as a reminder of the struggles her ancestors went through to accomplish what they have at the moment. Having said something about this character, I hope that you consider adding her as a friend in myspace, it will compensate later on…or not (just run away as fast as you can!).

Interview

Brian Friedman is a freshman at Queens College. He went to James Madison High School in Brooklyn, NY. He is a very humorous person who always tries to find laughter in just about anything. He lives with his mom Susan while his sister is away at college. He has a few hobbies. His main hobby is his girlfriend Samantha. He can't get enough of her. His other two hobbies are sneakers and baseball. These are the three most important things in his life other than his family. He is a very smart person who can absorb a massive amount of knowledge. I know from past classes with him. He hardly ever misses a day of work and it definitely pays off for him.

Corey's Life

Corey Caeti is a freshman at Queens College coming from James Madison in Brooklyn, NY. He plays on the baseball team here and works hard at practice nearly everyday. He has a large family that he is pretty close to. Corey is 18 years old, and is the youngest of all his siblings. He lives in Sheepshead Bay with his mother Martha, and his brother Ryan. He likes to go hang out with the kids from his neighborhood, especially during the NFL season. They have a tradition of watching all the games together. Corey is hardworking and determined in everything that he does.

Nicole

Nicole is a freshmen at Queens College. She lives at home with her family in East Meadows. For the most part, she enjoys the classes shes is taking in college. Like most girls her age, Nicole loves to have fun with her friends, She enjoys going to dinner, movies and even clubbing with her friends. Nicole is a fun loving girl.

Mr. Saif: A Model for Young Men Everywhere

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Saif for the partner assignment. Mr. Saif is an international student coming all the way from New Delhi, India. He is extremely polite and shows much humility. Mr. Saif is multilingual, and speaks about four languages including Sanskrit, Hindi, Bengali, and English. Speaking two languages is a big enough deal, but three or more is out of this world.

Mr. Saif is also religious, practicing Hinduism. He is a righteous man who plans to pursue a career in business. Mr. Saif enjoys hanging out with his friends, including his buddies from India who are also international students in the United States. Although he likes New York City, Mr. Saif misses India, where he allegedly used to see tigers. He is a man of many words, and serves as a role model for young men everywhere.

P.S. PLEASE USE THE OXFORD COMMA.

"My Space" cartoon

This cartoon is courtesy of Adam, who found it gracing the back cover page of a recent Reader's Digest. Notice all of the pieces of technology she is surrounded by. Because we are constantly barraged by various stimuli, people these days are able to multi-task like never before. Does this look like you?
Cris is honest and has a good sense of humor. He cares for his freinds because he didn't want me to be late to work. He works in the city and he has a girlfreind who is a very important part of his life. He's colombian and he lives with his aunt and uncle. Cris is a good student and wants to do in school since he didn't want me to joke around at all in the conversation.

Interview with Janice

Janice is a nice person. Janice spends her time mostly at home. When she is at home her time is usually spent on babysitting her younger brothers and sister. She seems to be the one in her househould that watches over the children. This shows that she cares alot for her siblings even though they may be tough at times. My interview with Janice was held very late at night till midnight. This is when she usually have time to do her own thing. Janice is always busy babysitting her younger siblings that she does not have too much time for herself.
Janice is also a very hard working student. A full time student, this semester she is taking five courses. She likes to take all her classes Monday through Thursday, and just have the whole Friday off. Janice wants to major in buisness and she is working hard for it. She does not waste her time during the weekends but spends her time doing her school work. Janice is caring and is devoted to her school work.

~~~About Amy~~~
Amy, who is my classmate in my English 110 class, is a very quiet girl. She is a freshman, and this is her second semester. While I was having a conversation with her on MSN, I think she is very quiet, introvert, not good at conversation with new people. Furthermore, I think she is a faithful Christian. As she mentioned is our conversation, she goes to Church every Sunday. Therefore, I think she is a faithful Christian.
Pamela
Pamela is currently a freshman at Queens College with an undecided major. For her second semester here she is taking anthropology 102, English 110, Spanish 250, and economics 101, which are all basic requirements. So far, she is enjoying the courses that she is taking. Pamela really enjoys math classes so perhaps that will steer her to choose a major in that field.
On the second day of class, it was brought to my attention that Pamela had recently moved to New York from Colombia. This sparked immediate conversation because I am also Colombia. She told me that she had been in New York for a little over nine months and that she moved here with her mother. Pamela lives in Astoria and has to take two trains to get to school everyday even though she doesn’t like to take the train.
When she is not in school, Pamela works at Queens Center mall so it is easy to imagine that her schedule is always very busy. For example, since she only has English class on Mondays, she goes straight from class to the mall to make it in time for her shift at 2pm and that ends at 9:30pm. She is obviously a very disciplined and motivated young woman.
Heather Ferreira
Heather Ferreira, she is really smart and dedicate.
She goes to Queens College and her major is biology. She is senior. She is a full time student and is taken about seventeen credits. This semester she is taken classes related with her major as anthropology, chemistry and biology but she is also taking dance class because it is not only one laser requirements, dance and rhythmic gymnastic are some of her favorite hobbies. Also she really likes to read especially about new medical researches.
Besides all the time she spends at college and all the time she has to take to do all her assignments she has time to work. She works in a doctor’s office for the pediatricians. Tree days a week Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. That job is perfect for her because she is next to the doctors and she can learn some things about her mayor, and it is only during week days. So she has all the weekend to rest and finish her college assignments.
Interview with Adam
Adam, my partner in this class is a very friendly guy. In the first class, when we were asked to talk to each other, he asked me how to say some short phrases in Chinese and taught me some words of Hebrew(I forhet whether that was all Hebrew language), and from the second class he say "Hello" in Chinese everytime when I come into the classroom. That's so cool.
Also Adam is gentle-hearted and patient, he wrote down his cell phone number and told me to call him when I was online if the time was good for me, and I also could call him if I need any help with my essay.
And when we talked each other on the IM, he use a lot some short words such as "ttys"; even though, that was a little bit hard to me because English is my second language, Adam would explain those patiently, so I appreciate that. In the fact, the IM is totally new to me, normally I use MSN messenger everyday, so I responsed him a bit slow sometimes, but he taught me how use the IM and gave some advices to change my screen name. Anyway, he is a polite and gentle- hearted boy and with his sweet nature.
Interview with Zhen
Zhen Li, a student at Queens College, has classes all morning, and yet manages to maintain a job. Although she may come home late at times, she is very devoted to her work, and also to her schooling. Although occupied with work and school, that does not hinder her creative fashion. Zhen likes changing her screen name, reflecting her creativity. Transcendentai1 and hunhunrabbit (not shown in interview) are just a few examples of her knack for style.
Zhen also likes relaxing on the computer, talking to her friends. But, because of her busy schedule, it may take some time to get her attention. Be persistent, though, and eventually she will make time for you. She is also polite, asking me, the lowly interviewer, how I am doing, and inquired as to my wellbeing.
Although Zhen is creative, as noted before, she may not be all that technically savvy. She does not know her to change her screen name, which seems to be pretty basic. She is honest and open, though, easily admitting her problems. All in all, Zhen is a great girl, and don’t miss her 30 minute segment on the E! channel tonight.
transcendentai1 (4:14:07 PM): y Zhen says "who's asking??"
transcendentai1 (4:14:12 PM): but.. And is a bit confused.
transcendentai1 (4:14:25 PM): i don't know how to do And confesses she doesn't know her to change her screen name.
SMDAJR (4:14:51 PM): ttys k? And that he will talk to Zhen soon. He seeks her approval.
transcendentai1 (4:15:26 PM): omg, explain those letters Zhen is confused, and doesn't understand what Adam said.
SMDAJR (4:15:34 PM): u dont know? Adam is puzzled that Zhen didn't understand him.
SMDAJR (4:15:39 PM): talk to you soon So he repeats himself (By saying he'll tlak to her soon)
transcendentai1 (4:16:02 PM): a little bit hard Zhen explains why she didn't understand what Adam had said.
SMDAJR (4:16:18 PM): sry Adam apologizes.
SMDAJR (4:16:23 PM): ill ttys i g2g 4 a min Adam says he will talk to Zhen soon, because he has to go away from the computer for a minute.
transcendentai1 (4:16:49 PM): i will be on line all day Becuase she will be on the internet all day.
SMDAJR (4:16:52 PM): k bye Adam understand, and bids adeu'.
Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us
The Introducing the book vidoe was taken down, but the Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us was so cool. There's so much information available, and you don't really realize it all the time. The internet is constantly changing, as we are constantly changing it. As it says in the video, "who will organize all this data?" and the things we have to reconsider. This was a very cool, well made video, and really stressed what the internet it, and is becoming.
Reminder
Hi Students,
This is a reminder that tomorrow we will cover what we weren't able to cover last week due to the cancelled class. Namely, we will be discussing Olga Kharif's "The Man Who Brought a :-) to Your Screen," James A. Marin's "LOL :) - A Guide to Internet Lingo and Emoticons" + links at end of article, and Jennifer 8. Lee's "I think, Therefore IM" (handout). You should have already posted your MySpace comment to one of these readings by last Wednesday 9pm, before you knew the class on Thursday would be cancelled. As I mentioned in my previous email, make sure to bring printouts of the readings for each class in order to boost discussion.
We will spend the last half of the class doing the peer review of your first draft, so make sure you bring a copy or you will be marked absent!
Introduction to a book
The picture shows the typical nature of human beings. And his ever ending desire to find new things. And he reacts when things are new to it.
I still remember my first computer class, I was in first when I was taken to computer lab
I was very exited to know how computer works .When my teacher asked to type some words on computer I was looking how to punch the keys and above all my teacher said"Computers are like girls mind" .So you must be cautious while working on them that thing still haunts me that if
by mistake I give any wrong command then its memory will be gone or it will stop working.
Same is the case here that man is very exited to know how to read the book but he is cautious while doing so. And we also reacts in same manner when you are shown some unusual
software or language to work on computer.like when we read some thing in book and or teacher teaches we try to make note of those things in our own words so that we may not forget it or remember at the time of exams.
Are 'machine' Really using 'us'
It looks very exiting that machine's are doing our work. And every body is after machines
more you are technically advanced more you will be upheld.But how many have really think about that,are we become slave of machine.
In my opinion "yes".
Now we are so used to machine that we even don'nt think our work done without machines.
Now even classes or online and you can have get degree. Gone are the days when there use to tradtional classes.
And some times it seems that why to get a college degree when you can get knowledge of your interest on net . Every thing is avalabile you just have click on the site address.
But to some extend it is good also for example its fast means of connection and due to this world is changing at a very fast pase. In on survey I read that after every ten years the medical books and earlier theories become outdated and have to be changed.life has become too fast .And some times we feel so edicted to this technology that we even do'nt have time for ourselves also.
And due to advancement in internet sector all the data is online. This is like a world in itself of which you are just a triffle part.
Many friends of mine are so edicted to net that they even do'nt go college and you can always find them on net chatting ,making new friends online.
At last but not the least I just want to add man must take the work from machine not make slave to them. As for what machines are.
About the Web 2.0...
I can not imagin that how can we live only with a pencil and a paper.
Without the website, we have to carry the hundred lbs of books because we have no choices; then we do our homework by writing, but now we can typing our essay follow the professor's requirement. In the other side, use the web, we can change the information quickly; thus, we will have more reader than others. If we only use pen to write news and print newspaper, we should miss lots of things during the printing, and we have no chance to change the information when the newspaper have done, that's so bad. But now we can use web 2.0 to change everything on the website easily and instantly; for example, we can change the daily news just change from the sources, that's it; or, we also can change the structure of the website if we know some basic computer programe language, that's no so difficult also; at last, the website will become more funny and colorful and more popular of course.
About the "Introducing the book"
That's so funny, it made me remember my first time to use a laptop many years ago,that was really a technology to open it;actually, the first time that someone use a new thing first time, that should be called technology. This funny story seemed happen long long ago,so may be people use silk or other material before the paper using, so that's why they guy looked so excited about how to open the book and use it because he never saw it before. Such as the computer, I think everyone they all remember the first timeto use the computer; in the fact, I called the customer service center after purchasing every day at that time, this guy was lucky, at least he had a face to face technology manager to help him.
A bit of everyone
This is how my living room looks when it is laundry day. As you can see, most of the clothes are already ironed and ready to store in the closet. Some other things are hanging around until they are dry. This is where the family relaxes from any other things they have been doing during the day. Whether its homework, school, work, or just washing the dishes, everyone gets their own time to watch what ever they fell like. There are days in which my cousin and I would buy something to eat and rent movies only because we feel that we needed some couch time. My aunt and uncle are only attracted to sit here when the news or any other entertaining shows where people get to win a ton of money are broadcasted. I guess I chose this place to post because this is where all of the family has something in common, or spends some time doing the same things that we don’t do for the rest of the day.
Prof. Kijowski's Refrigerator
I was so inspired by your pictures that I had to post one myself. I, however, have the luxury of allowing YOU to describe my image to me. What does this picture tell you about me?
So this is my room. To be honest, its usually not as clean as its shown on this picture. On any given day, I have clothes thrown around, several books on the bed and other scattered knick-knacks. My room is as small and confining as it looks. What you can see in the picture is my bed, nightstand, dresser, tv, etc. When I first moved into my room, the walls were white and plain. My mother recommended that I brighten up the room a bit, so I bought a few posters to cover the walls. I went for posters of my favorite cartoons, which I guess says Im a typical TV person. My nightstand is always full of clutter. I have my lamp and alarm clock, both of which I need. I also have a Bible, which I never read. There's also a piggy bank which I make use of. Its kind of hard to see on the pic, but I also have my air pump for my asthma on the nightstand, something I keep close to me. And rounding out my clutter is a pile of comic books, which is my usual night-time reading material. I almost never use the TV because it's kinda broken. Theres nothing else much to be said about my room. If bedrooms are a reflection of the person living in them then I guess my room says about me that Im disorganized, I like cartoons, I value the essentials and I read comic books.
The SwindleR's Lair
The items that I chose to take pictures of in my room are: my bed, my books, and my collection of books. My books pretty much define who I am, or in some cases who I used to be. My collection is comprised mostly of Bridge technique books because I used to be a bridge fanatic. I also have a big card collection because I love to play cards (although ironically I never play cards in person). It's difficult to find people my age who play bridge because it is generally considered an old-ladies game. As far as my novels go, most of my books (some not shown here) are by white-European authors like Shakespeare and Jane Austen. I used to be into European music (classical), language (German), and literature, until I finally came to my senses and realized that I was not, in fact, a white European. Most of the authors were probably racist anyway, given the era in which they lived (some of this is reflected in Shakespeare's plays), but this is irrelevant to this post. Nonetheless I still love the literature. My room is pretty simple. A bed, a lamp, a clock. I have some old posters on my wall that I had from when I was younger and was into video games and Disney, and even though I'm older I still have them. In a way, they are a link to the past because they remind me of the good old days when I didn't have much to worry about. So, in closing, (as it is 8:57 PM, moments from the deadline), this is my room.
This is a picture from my bedroom, most important parts of my life are displayed in some way on my computer desk. Starting from the top I have all my hats. Not so much any more, but I used to wear hats everyday. Under that is my colognes and a picture of me and my girlfriend from our senior trip in high school. On the left of the screen is half of a broken bat that I took from one of my games. Under that is sneaker cleaner, when I have nothing else to do I clean a few pairs of sneakers. The rest of the mess is just the way I live, I can't keep my room not a mess for more than a week.
my refrigerator
My family it’s only my mom and me. My refrigerator really it doesn’t say a lot about me but it says a lot about my mom. As you can see there is a picture of my 17TH birthdates. My mom put that picture almost 3 years ago when I was in Colombia I just asked her why she did it and, she says that she missed me a lot and she wanted to be reminded of me every time she opened the refrigerator. There are magnets of little angel all over my refrigerator because my mother is very religious and she fells that they protect us. There is also a mother’s day card that I made for her and, she was very happy when I gave it to her. And as u see I really like to make cards and all that stuff but I now don’t have time to do it. The refrigerator is so white and clean as my mom she is so organized. And it also is small as the kitchen and the apartment.
This picture is pretty much me when I'm at home. Im always in my room doing a million things at once. My dog Clyde is always just sitting there keeping me company. On my bed is my laptop which is alwayss on. I'm either instant messaging, checking facebook, shopping online (thats why my wallet is right next to the comp. for easy access) or probably doing all three at the same time. There's a notebook cause I was doing other homework when I took this picture. And of course my cell phone (because I'm emotionally attached to it and I dont go anywhere without it). Basically my bed in the picture represents me being a multitasker. For the most part I wont get anything done unless I'm doing it all at once because I really have little time and patience.
Well this is my room. I have my portable desk with my laptop on it which I use often. In the corner there's the little stand for my stuff animals. There's the picture on the wall which my dad bought for me and I really like it. I'm in the middle of redecorating my room so its a little empty. It doesn't really describe me but the things I got there are sort of representative. The picture has a lot of color and is very bright which is sort of like me. I'm always happy and laughing all the time. The stuffed animals represent the child in me which I still kind of have and dont really want to let go of. My big bed is my favorite part of my room because it's so so so comfortable.
This is my refrigerator, its pretty messy. I can't really take a complete picture of it because we have a counter on the other side of the kitchen. Anyway, there's lots of stuff on it like pictures and my brother's notices from school. My mom was the one that puts most of what you see on the fridge. On the very right corner of the fridge there is a picture of my brother and below it my cousin when he was younger. And as you move towards the left there's lots of smaller pictures of myself as a toddler, me my sister and my dad, my brother and my dad, my mom my cousin again and another picture of my sister and of me. Most of the photos are old so its not frequently updated. Below that are just magnets and paper mostly my brother's, his school calender and other school notices. How this represents my family, well actually I think my mom put most of the things on the refrigerator especially the pictures. I guess that shows that family is very important to us and my mom like to just take a look at the pictures when were were young. I think it shows that she's a very caring mother. With my brother's notices I guess we also take school seriously.
well this is my room! i have a lot of stuffed animals that i've had for a long time but i cant part with! on the wall i have the puerto rican flag and the guatemalan flag too. i have lots of pictures as well because my family isnt here in ny so i like to have their pictures all around. i have candles and thats pretty much it! i also have my hs diploma and my mother graduate diploma. i guess its pretty average. my most prized belongings i would have to say are my pictures because i have this really old pricless picture of my mother and her brothers in guatemala when they were little! i guess what my room says about me is that my family is very important and i like my room to be nice and neat so im a organized person.
It's not the greatest picture in the world but this is my messy living room. This is what three nephews do to it. Most of the items in my living room are either baby things or things that my mom refuses to throw out. In the top left, there is a book shelf that is about ten years old. On the left is a piano that is about 40 years old. My mom refuses to throw those out becuase they are her memories. Basically everything in the middle are baby toys. There is a high chair and a little bed for my youngest nephew, Blake to watch tv on. Basically my family is a little messy. My house has basically become a house that lets the toys sit out all week until Sunday and then we clean it up and prepare for it to be messy again.
This is my desk in my bedroom, as you can see, there is a lot of stuff on my desk. I don't like to tidy up my desk at all, my desk is always messing up! And my father always ask me to clean it because there is no space let me to do my homework. But when I have to find a space to do my home work, i will always move my stuff to my bed , and then when I am go to sleep, I will just move my stuff back to the desk. So that is me, I am lazy to tidy up my room and there is always full of stuff in my bedroom. When I get a book from my bookshelf, I never put it back after I read it, I just leave it on my desk. However, sometimes I can't stand for the my messy desk, I will tidy it up. but after 1 or 2 days, it will go back to the same way--a messy desk.
nicole
So heres my fridge. On the outside there is absolutely nothing because my mom is a neat freak and doesnt like "clutter", plus i dont even think magnets stick to it. If it was up to me there would probably be tones of pictures and reminders on it. This is actually the first time in a long time that ive really looked the inside of my fridge because im not home very often but as you can see there isnt much in there. My mom is also a health freak so we always have fruits and yogurt and stuff but never anything thats bad for you. In the freezer there are some waffles, meat, vegetables and microwavable stuff for my brother when he gets home from school. I guess my fridge is pretty representative of my family. Im never home and my brother is usually out too so most of the food in there is my moms.
My Room
My room is pretty standard and although it may be a little plain I think it may say a lot about me. By the way, sorry I didn't make the bed properly. There is a dresser with a mirror, a large and comfy bed, two more bureaus, and side tables. My favorite part about my room is the desk. That is mainly where I spend my time and for anyone who really knows me, they know that I am into my school work and it's my first priority. I have two computers and tend to multitask because of this. I can be doing research for biology on one and typing this for English at the same time. The next favorite part of my room is my chair. I know usually it's the guys who have chairs but I guess you can say that I deviate from the standard. My chair is pretty awesome. It's from Sharper Image, and it is a massage chair. That's where I get all my readings done for school and when that's finished, it's where I sit, get a massage, and watch t.v. The picture by my chair was bought with a carpe diem mentality. I was in the mall one day and just bought it. It is somewhat dark and mysterious so I don't know what that may say about me but I don't typically consider myself to be dark and mysterious.
my bed room
The picture shown above is of my bedroom in which you can see my roommate busy chatting with his friend. The room is pretty huge with a king size bed . The big ban shown in the second picture was gifted to me by my friends when i moved in my appartment. Adjacent to the clock you can see the "Holy Quaran" which i read before going to bed every night. As the appartment is shared by four students, the appartment is not fully furnished, though everyone has a separate room. My room is the biggest room amongst all others. the room is painted white with a lot of posters on the wall. One of the poster on the wall of my room shows the picture of "Mother Teressa" that symbolises PEACE.
My bed room
My bedroom
Here is my bedroom.
This is my new bedroom because I just moved from China last year. Even though my bedroom in China was much bigger than this one, they all had the same style like this which I like calling it conciseness. I really don't like putting a lot of things everywhere in my bedroom; for example, thorwing my socks or clothes on the floor or putting some snacks next to the computer, I really hate that. In my opinion, the bedroom is only for sweet dream, if there are lots of things, I will be mad and have a nightmare everyday. So all of my clean clothes are inside the closets those with mirrors on their doors and the dirties have to be washed as soon as I can. On my desk, there are only my laptop and the light, other things such as my testbooks were put in the study room which was downstairs. Although I keep trying to clean my bedroom everyweek to keep it clean, a trash can was necessary to put next to the desk, that would keep my room clean when I was too lazy to take garbage out. Finally, I want to say my bedroom is a reflection of my personality.
My Refrigirator
This is my refrigerator.
As you can tell, there are many things cluttering it. My family actually got a new fridge recently, so it’s not as full as it will be in a few weeks. On the top left we have some papers and old comics, some of which are probably at least ten years old. On the top right are some various magnets and things. There’s a list of my sisters 5th grade class, a memo holder, and a crab magnet. There’s an award from my camp saying that I completed Mario. On the left side is a brochure from the hotel we recently went to. There’s some letter magnets, and some Hebrew/religious articles on the top. There is also a letter saying my little sister was the student of the week, and there’s some pens and random papers. On the bottom theres a list of plays that my teacher is in. Overall I would say my refrigerator represents my family, or at least some of our attributes.
(I had written this as a comment to the professors assignment, I'm just reposting it here as a seperate blog entrance)
There are many differences between writing about yourself freely, and about doing it on the computer. When writing about yourself on the computer on sites such as MySpace and facebook there are specific questions about yourself you are asked, and certain things you are prompted to say. True, you can add some of your own personality, but it’s harder to interpret it then reading someone’s writing. Penmanship and the way people write can tell you about a person. You also learn about a person when it is not so structured, because more of their personality is interjected into the paper. People may take online personas a bit far. People become obsessed with them, mistaking it for real life. It may be fun to participate in websites like MySpace and facebook, but it has to be realized that it is not real life. Being part of a global community may make people feel that they are part of something bigger. That is ok, but I feel it has to be taken with a grain of salt, and people should have the right state of mind when setting up online avatars.
Sunday, February 4, 2007
I think is good to talk about us in class because we can learn more about our classmates and, fell more comfortable when we have to do a group work or we have to give some opinions in class. I have some classes with 50 people and I don’t even recognize them, but in this class I at least now their names and some thing about their lives.
Having a cyber-composition class is really good because it is a different way to learn how to write. I am going to have more afford, because I know al my classmates can read it not only the teacher.
I had myspace before, but I used it to talk with my friends and have fun. I never thought that myspace was going to be part of my college classes, and it was going to help me improve my writing.
Creating an online persona is great, except there's always that dilemma if you should post who you really are or who you wish you could be. I'm about 99% honest about who I am, except when I create screen names and stuff. Of course, I'm not really a swindler. But creating an online persona is lots of fun, depending on how you create it. As far as being part of a global community, I couldn't really tell you what that term means. It's one of those terms like "global citizen" or "global economy" that I can't really define. I mean I guess the internet is sort of an intersection of peoples from all over the world. So I just try to put my little part in and represent my culture as much as I can, so people will know what it means to be Jamaican or an West-Indian American or a New Yorker. And I guess I'm always looking to see what people have to say about where they live and what they believe and stuff.
Writing an in-class personal narrative was kind of an awkward experience. I knew the assignment was to write about myself, so I tried to describe myeslf in way that would be honest and wouldnt bore the reader. I also felt that the process of writing the narrative was very informal and almost conversational. Without the worry of being graded on grammer, spelling or structure, I wrote like how I would speak. For me, the experience was very similar to creating my MYSPACE profile. I've had a Myspace profile for awhile now, but I remember how reluctant I was about putting myself out there in the digital world. After awhile, I gradually grew more comfortable with Myspace and allowed myself to express myself more. I never thought of myself as a "virtual entity", but I guess it does apply to me and most people who use the internet. Online avatars allow us to have a presence in the digital world. And if theres anything to be said about people its that they want to have a presence.
When I wrote my in-class personal narrative last week I felt kind of weird because I cant really describe myself well on a piece of paper in a short amount of time. I felt like no matter what I wrote whoever read it still wouldn’t know much about me besides basic facts like where I live, how many people are in my family etc. I don’t think anyone would be able to really get a feel for who I am by reading it. I think that creating a blog or something online can be a lot more personal because I'd be constantly updating it, writing about my daily routine, friends and other things which could be a lot more informative than any descriptive essay I write. I’m not really into the whole blogging/myspace scene because I just find it unnecessary to put myself out there for everyone to see. I like the idea of getting to know someone in person a lot better than meeting online. I’m also sort of a safety freak so that’s mainly why I’m not really into it. I do have a facebook but I only use it to keep in touch with my friends who are away at college or in Israel and I keep privacy settings on it so people who aren’t my friends can’t view my profile or pictures. For me, I think that being a part of a “global community” does have its benefits and can be very useful in terms of communication and keeping in touch with friends who we don’t necessarily get to see or speak to on a regular basis.
Difference between a creating a online persona and writing about myself in class.
Man is a social being and he lives in varoius societies and groups but every body have different thoughts and belives. So whenever we have to express ourself with others we try to expose only those parts which seems common in all of us. As you know nobody wants others to interfare with their personal life matters.
Same was the case there when I was asked to write abot myself in class.I know that my professor and my class is going to read it. So I tried to give that discription about myself that's
close to my nature and behaviour.But when I was asked to create an account on myspace.
I was ultra cautious because I don'nt know apart from my classmates and my professor who else is going to view my profile and they can be my parents also. So,I filled only general information about myself and thoughts which seems not conflicting with anybody else.I will try not to give my personal phone number or my email i.d.
By virtual entiety it means that my thoughts and my speeches will be one of its own type in this whole world like that of finger prints that a person have one of its own type.
And by global community it refers to the context that you are now part of whole community
of account holders of that site. You can post your videos,your comments and it hardly makes any difference that you are sitting in new york and other member is sitting i n tokyo, ghana ,london or in tasmania.and we all get that stage to represent ourself, our thoughtsand our
culture.and thus the saying of proverb 'global village' came true. And apart of every thing you
got opportunity to get through others culture and traditions. So, altogether its fun that you are
integral part of that community in you are one of your own type and representing yourself.
Creating an online persona is really nothing new for me. When Myspace first started it was all anyone could talk about and people really obsessed over it. There are so many options and features to play around with that it has become a time consuming past time. Why has Myspace become the new craze and why does it seem like everyone has one? Having an online personality allows us to be people that we may not entirely be. We are allowed to manipulate facts and create certain statuses about ourselves that may be partially true but not 100% true. Online personas can be deceiving. Anything that is on the web, unless it is on a credible website, really can’t be trusted. Being a virtual entity allows me to easily communicate with friends and especially friends who I don’t always get to speak to on a daily basis. Even though this is a wonderful idea, it must be used with caution. Meeting people who we don’t necessarily know is even more dangerous because the picture we are seeing may not be who that person really is. We read many stories of young kids who are not informed about the dangers of online communities and the sad consequences of the fact. As long as you practice caution, online global communities can be a fun way of communicating and expressing yourself and allowing yourself to be heard
Writing a personal narrative on my blog is something that I don't like to do although I have a Xanga account. It is not a good feeling that some people that I don't know can know everything about me, so that I seldom to write my Xanga. So why I created a Xanga? Because all of my friends have it and I am forced to created one. To have a Internet blog seems to be a "norms" that everybody should obtain one and engage into this activity.
However, writing an article about myself in class is different. I tended to write it formally while I was writing in class because I know my professor is going to read it. Furthermore, I would write some basic information only, such as age, gender, and race. etc.
To be a part of "global community" is not that bad, at least I can know more about what is happening in the world easily and instantly.
Global communities
Creating a description of what makes me in class was something that came out in the moment without much thought. Myspace, involves other things to consider. Maybe I would like to create the person I want to be and not who I am, therefore I could manipulate certain facts to make it seem as if the person in me had done everything expected of myself. In my case, creating a public person or a character that will be available to any one who has internet is not something attractive. Even if some things could be changed to make it seem like someone else, or if the webpage could be set to private, I would rather not create such image at all. In some ways, this could be beneficial for some people, but when they justify such benefits, other things could have the same function, such as emails or instant messages. Even though I don’t like this idea, global communities are not bad when they are constructed in a good way.
How I felt writing my in-class personal narrative, at first I was a little surprised that we had to write about ourselves. I felt a little weird about it, it reminded me of elementary school I don't think that I was too organized when writing it. On how I felt about creating an online persona, I have a xanga account but I'm not too keen on writing/posting things. I don't really like to create an online persona, because I feel that I can't writing about something that I'm not pretending to be another person. To be a virtual entity means creating another being on the web. Being a virtual entity is being totally free of worries of how people look at you on the web. What it means to me in being part of a "global community" is that I'm connected to everyone that uses the internet. I guess to me it means that in a sense, I am part of a greater body, being "in the flow" with the internet age.
First of all,I want to say I entirely approve to create an online avatar.
Someone they don't like blog, the reason should be they thought it was dangerous to put personal information online;in the fact, the system has some control hierarchies to protect the blog, we just need to mark on the contact list to allow who you would like to allow to visit your blog, that's it,it's easy but very effective.
For myself,I have three blogs online,they gave me the second home and the second life. Even though it takes me a lot of time to manage,I can communicate with all of my friends on my space or in the chat room;moreover,I can keep in touch with them wherever they are.I divided my blogs into many types;for example, only for my best friends,only for myself and for others.Of course I will perform a true life to my friends and write journal on my blogs which are only for friends or for myself beacuse I don't need to worry about that a stranger may barge in;then,I will put my photos in the album or upload video after a good trip from somewhere...I like to share the good experiences with friends.But I will wear a persona on my public website,hiding photos and profile are necessary,its only used for setting up a community for everyone to discuss topics that we are all interested in;on the other hand, it can help someone if they need help.
Anyway,the online space is not a bad way to exchange with others,that's great.
I understand why many people have some reservations about creating an online avatar. I mean, you hear about so many crazy people online stealing information and stalking other people that sites like myspace and facebook could, for some, understandably raise concern. I myself never used to see a purpose in creating a myspace page until some of my friends moved away and I wanted to keep in contact with them. Soon enough i was posting comments on peoples pages that I havent seen or heard from in years. I dont think that these sites are for everyone. Some people have more of a need for privacy than others or just dont think its a very safe thing to do. I for one believe that its websites like these that has enabled people to express themselves in a new way that could never have been done before. Blogs, chat rooms, and personal pages have connected people from all over the world and for some people that could be a scary thought knowing that your hobbies, friends, and photo albums could be viewed by anyone. For others like myself, its a statement of identity. Of coarse there are safe and unsafe ways of going about it but when people are aware of the possible dangers of giving away too much information and do it safely, then i dont see how any bad can come of it.
